About DataPay

Your data is your asset

The idea

Every day, households already generate the data that describes what a community actually needs — what they're buying, what they're running low on, what they'd pay for. That data has always been valuable to someone. Historically, it just hasn't been valuable to the household that generated it.

DataPay changes who benefits. Households answer a few short questions a day and browse a real product catalog, earning tokens either way. Organizations get a direct, honest channel to that same community — never a household's identity, only an aggregated signal real enough to act on.

What we won't do

  • Charge a household. Households never pay DataPay anything.
  • Sell or share an individual household's answers, identity, or location.
  • Publish a number before at least 10 households stand behind it.
  • Let an organization see a member directly — fulfillment stays identity-blind.
  • Withdraw the Commons Fund — no one can, including us.
  • Pretend a feature is finished when it isn't — see our privacy policy for exactly what's built today and what's still honestly in progress.

How your data earns, and who it earns for

Pooled, household data is worth something: DataPay turns it into product intelligence for sellers — what to make, how much, and where — so markets waste less. It earns two ways, both from the selling side. A seller pays a small share of each sale made through DataPay — set per product, and shown to them when they list. And an organization pays for the questions it asks; the token reward on each goes to the households who answer. Households never pay DataPay anything.

Every rupee DataPay earns goes one of two ways. A part runs, maintains and develops the platform. The rest goes into the Commons Fund — and only what the fund earns is ever spent.

The fund is being set up as a trust. Until then what your data earns is held, and nothing has been paid out.

How the Commons Fund works

Where the money comes from. A fixed share of what DataPay earns from sellers — fees on sales, and the demand intelligence organizations pay for — flows into the fund. Never from members, who never pay.

Why no one can take it out. The fund is a permanent endowment. It has no owner and no withdrawal, by design — not members, not DataPay, not any buyer. That is what makes it impossible to capture, sell, or lose.

What it earns, and what that is for. The fund is kept in safe, low-risk instruments such as bank deposits and government securities. Only its earnings are used: to stand behind loans and crop insurance for farmers and producer groups, so lenders and insurers will serve people they otherwise wouldn't — and to be shared with the neighbourhoods that built it.

Who decides. Each neighbourhood decides whether its share of the earnings is paid out or left to grow. Tokens are each member's record of contribution, and the voice that comes with it.

The fund is being structured now, as a trust. Sharing begins after the pilot.

What the market gets

The argument is not only that households and sellers each do better — it is that the market between them does. When demand is visible before supply is committed, less is wasted, chains get shorter, and what gets made is what people actually wanted.

For the market

  • Make what people actually wantProducers see demand before they commit a season or a run.
  • Less wasteStock matched to real demand: less spoilage, fewer unsold runs.
  • Shorter chainsProducers reach households directly; fewer hands take a cut.
  • Advertising that isn't guessworkReach the people who already said they need it.
  • Innovation aimed at real gapsUnmet demand shows up as a signal, not a hunch.
  • A market that self-correctsWhen demand is visible and honest, supply moves toward it.

Who it's for

Household members who want a small, honest reward for information they're already generating — and organizations, brands, and local suppliers who want real demand signals instead of guesses, and a direct way to reach the community that produced them.
